WHEN TO USE
Use this rig when fishing for catfish in lakes, reservoirs, or slow-moving rivers. Excellent for bottom fishing from shore or boat. The sliding weight lets the fish pick up the bait without feeling resistance — crucial for catfish that mouth the bait before running.
GEAR NEEDED
- •Egg sinker or no-roll sinker (1—4 oz depending on current)
- •Barrel swivel (sturdy, black)
- •Leader line (18—36 inch, 20—50 lb test)
- •Circle hook or J-hook (size 5/0—8/0 for big cats)
- •Bead (optional, to protect knot from sinker)
- •Main line (30—65 lb braid recommended)
STEP-BY-STEP SETUP
- 1Thread the egg sinker onto your main line.
- 2Add a plastic bead after the sinker (protects knot).
- 3Tie your main line to the barrel swivel.
- 4Cut a 18—36 inch leader from your leader material.
- 5Tie one end of the leader to the other end of the swivel.
- 6Tie your circle hook to the free end of the leader using a Palomar or Snell knot.
- 7Test all knots before casting — catfish put serious pressure on rigs.

PROS
- +Sliding weight lets fish take bait without resistance
- +Works well from shore or boat
- +Can handle heavy weight for long casts or current
- +Simple to tie and reliable
- +Leader keeps bait just above the bottom
CONS
- –Prone to snags in rocky or weedy bottoms
- –Weight slide can wear main line over time
- –Requires strong swivels for big fish
- –Not ideal for floating bait presentations
COMMON MISTAKES
- !Leader too short — fish feel the weight before you feel the bite
- !Sinker too light — won't hold bottom in current
- !Hook too small — big cats throw undersized hooks
- !Not checking line wear above the sinker — replace regularly
- !Circle hook set with a jerk — just reel tight, let the hook do the work
